CHAPTER 6

After sending Hayward on his covert mission—not all that taxing, considering he was invisible to everyone but me—I descended the stairs with Flapjack in tow, stopping short of the last steps when Daisy’s muffled voice reached me.

“... got the voicemail and decided I would handle it myself. I want this place rented out every bit as much as you do, Alvin. I figured you were off drinking somewhere anyway!” she hissed.

I hung back, awkwardly caught between wanting to get the heck out of the shop, but also not wanting to intrude on what seemed like a private conversation.

Flapjack, however, had no such qualms. The ghostly Himalayan barreled forward, leaving the stairwell and darting around the corner out of sight with a mischievous little snicker.

“Flapjack!” I whisper-shouted, to no avail.

Naturally.

“Then next time you pick up the phone!” Daisy exclaimed.

I flinched. Oh boy.

“Coast’s clear, Scar!” Flapjack called, still sounding thoroughly amused with himself.

Exhaling, I took the last few steps, the bottom one squeaking underfoot, then joined Daisy in the empty shop, glancing down at my own phone as though I’d been absorbed in thought and hadn’t overheard her half of the heated conversation.

“Sorry about that,” Daisy said.

I glanced up and she raked a hand through her slightly bedraggled hair, and turned back to face me, pasting a smile back in place. “I guess I’d better lock up. Unless there’s anything else you wanted to see?”

I shook my head. “I think I’m all set. But thank you.” I gestured toward the silver key I’d placed on the front counter upon arriving. “That’s the key from the coded lockbox.”

Daisy nodded. “Right. Of course. Thank you.”

She dug into her purse, then passed me a business card. “That’s our direct number, if you think of any questions, or want to set up a time to get an electrician in here. Alvin might know someone he could recommend.”

I pocketed the card and nodded. “Thanks.”

Following another awkward nod and a second set of stilted goodbyes, I slipped past Daisy and exited the shop, glancing both ways up and down the street and sidewalk for any sign of Hayward and Sarah.

“Whew! I can breathe again!” Flapjack exclaimed. “The air in there was a little thick with all that desperation hanging around, wouldn’t you say?”

“Be nice,” I chided him. “And you don’t even need to breathe.”

With a chuckle-slash-wheeze, he strutted down the sidewalk with renewed purpose, casting a curious eye at the neat line of trees along the street and the hanging baskets dangling from the street lamps, bursting with yellow and orange mums. A few of the other shops on Hydrangea Lane were decorated for Halloween, with the usual skeletons, pumpkins, witches’ hats, and of course, ghosts.

Following after my own personal ghostie, the kind that lingered three-hundred-sixty-five days of the year, I added, “She’s clearly in a bad spot. Although, I’m not sure why they’re having trouble renting it out. Sarah seems like a nice enough ghost. I wonder what else has been going on around here, to make people think it’s spooky.
